🦇 The Batman 2: All Useful Information

Direction, main actors, synopsis

The second The Batman film is directed by Matt Reeves, just like the first one. The main character, Bruce Wayne — also known as Batman — is played by Robert Pattinson (famous for portraying Edward Cullen in Twilight).

The 2022 film was a definite success, even though it seemed to go against the creative direction taken by earlier projects (including Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight films).

For some people, this second chapter was starting to feel long overdue. Initially, its French release was planned for early October 2025. However, the official release date has now been announced: the film will only be available on the big screen starting October 2, 2026, in the United States.

This delay is directly linked to the writers’ strike that disrupted Hollywood throughout 2023.
If you don’t want to wait that long, why not try our Batman Escape adventure? 😉

Casting for The Batman: Part II

Here is the planned cast for The Batman Part II, expected in 2026. Unsurprisingly, the film keeps the same core cast from the first The Batman movie:

  • Robert Pattinson as Batman / Bruce Wayne
  • Paul Dano as The Riddler (Nigma)
  • Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman / Selina Kyle
  • Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin
  • Jeffrey Wright as GCPD Lieutenant Gordon
  • Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler

If his role was secondary in the first installment, Barry Keoghan still left a strong impression as the Joker and has mentioned in interviews that he might appear in the sequel.

Summary of the first film (spoilers ahead)

For two years, Batman has acted as a nighttime vigilante to stop the criminals haunting Gotham City. A serial killer begins terrorizing the city, leaving behind cryptic riddles. Don Mitchell Jr., one of the mayoral candidates, is murdered. The clues deciphered by the Dark Knight lead him to confront several figures of the underworld: Catwoman, the Penguin, and Carmine Falcone, the local mafia boss.

Bit by bit, the masked vigilante finds himself face-to-face with the Riddler and learns more about his own past by discovering that of his enemy. But even behind bars, the Riddler’s game is far from over — Gotham City and the life of its newly elected mayor Bella Réal will soon face grave danger…

Public Reception and Statistics

The first film, released in 2022, was very well received by critics and audiences.
Although Robert Pattinson differs from previous actors who portrayed Batman, he delivers a fresh version considered original and even revolutionary.

Let’s not forget that by 2022, the Gotham hero had already been reinvented for over 80 years across numerous mediums.

Fans of the comics and the character appreciate the dark tone of the universe, the gripping atmosphere of Gotham’s depths, the realism of the story, and the reinvention of the main character.
In short: Matt Reeves’ artistic direction resonates with many fans of the Dark Knight — respecting the comic book origins while bringing new ideas.

🃏 The Batman II — What About the Joker? Which Villains Will Appear?

Since the first film ends with a fairly explicit connection between the Riddler and the Joker, many believe the second film might focus more heavily on the Clown Prince of Crime.

Some fans hoped to see villains like Scarecrow, Professor Pyg, Clayface, or Hush — but these rumors were quickly denied by James Gunn, the new head of DC Studios.

It is true that Matt Reeves once mentioned a confrontation between his Batman and Hush, but he later clarified that Hush would not be the main antagonist.

Opinions tend to lean toward the introduction of a villain who has never appeared in live-action before. Some rumors suggest the possible appearance of Clayface, especially after director Mike Flanagan (often referred to as horror’s “new master”) expressed interest.

In short: even if it’s not the Riddler, the mystery remains!

A New Spin-Off Series Arriving in 2024

An 8-episode mini-series created by Lauren LeFranc will once again feature Colin Farrell’s Penguin.
The story is set about one week after the Riddler’s events in the film.

Film Delayed to 2026

The Batman: Part II has been delayed by one year — from October 2025 to fall 2026. Fans waiting to see Robert Pattinson again will need patience.

His next film, Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon-ho, has also been postponed to January 29, 2025.

Originally scheduled for October 3, 2025 in the U.S. (and two days earlier in France), Matt Reeves’ film will now premiere on October 2, 2026 (likely September 30 in France).

This means there will be more than 4 years between the first two installments of Reeves’ trilogy inspired by DC Comics.

Robert Pattinson therefore follows a long lineage of actors who portrayed Batman: Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck.

Matt Reeves Shares First Details About The Batman II Script

Matt Reeves s'exprime sur le scénario de The Batman 2

The story will take place after HBO’s The Penguin series, where Colin Farrell reprises his role. The series explores the power struggle following the assassination of Carmine Falcone by the Riddler.

The Penguin series will introduce major figures in Gotham’s power war, including Sofia Falcone, also known as the Hangman.
This character plays a key role in Batman: Dark Victory, where she has strong connections to Two-Face.

With Farrell confirmed for the sequel, the film could feature a new alliance between the Penguin and Two-Face — seeking to eliminate Gotham’s remaining criminal remnants.

Because Matt Reeves has stated he does not want fantasy elements in his Batman films (“We could push to the edge of the fantastical, but we won’t cross into fantasy. It must feel grounded”), the Court of Owls could be an ideal antagonist for a grounded crime epic.

Reeves has said this sequel will:

  • “dig deeper into the theme of corruption”
  • “explore corners not seen in the first film”
  • “reveal sides of the character you’ve never seen before”
  • “focus on Batman’s inner demons — which can never be fully exorcised”

The Batman Part II Should Take Place in Winter

Reeves confirmed the plot happens during winter, likely around the holidays. This icy atmosphere inevitably makes fans think of Mr. Freeze.
It could offer stunning scenery and fuel speculation about the upcoming villain.

🔎 FAQ – Everything You Need to Know About the Batman Universe

Where does the character of Batman originally come from?

For those of you who are new and eager to learn, here is a quick overview about our favorite vigilante:

Batman is a fictional character created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger.

This superhero from the DC Comics universe appeared for the first time in Detective Comics #27, a comic book published in March 1939.

In the story, everything begins when young Bruce Wayne witnesses the cruel murder of his parents by a masked thief in a dark alley in Gotham City, as they were leaving an outing together.

Driven by his thirst for revenge and his need to restore order, the young man invents a discreet silhouette to fight criminals when night falls: the Dark Knight, Batman.

Batman does not have superpowers like Superman. He uses his intelligence, a wide array of highly sophisticated gadgets, and his combat skills to defeat his enemies.

Even though Batman is a rather solitary vigilante, he still knows how to surround himself with precious allies: his butler Alfred Pennyworth, his partner Robin, and Commissioner James Gordon, among others.

Where can you watch Batman films?

While it is sometimes possible to see older Batman films again on the big screen in theaters, it is much easier to watch them via streaming.

Unfortunately, DC Comics films have disappeared from some platforms such as Netflix, but it is still possible to watch Batman movies online by renting them (on YouTube, Amazon Prime, or other platforms) or by purchasing them.
