Harley Quinn, The Most Villainous Heroine in Gotham
Harley Quinn is a pop culture icon from the Batman (DC Comics) universe, embodying the duality of good and evil in a world filled with heroes and villains. Known as the Jokerâs tortured partner-in-crime, she has become a beloved and powerful character in her own right.

Who Is Harley Quinn?
Harley Quinn, real name Harleen Quinzel, is one of the most celebrated characters in the DC Universe. Initially appearing as the Jokerâs quirky sidekick and romantic interest, she made her debut in the 1992 animated Batman: The Animated Series. Originally intended as a one-time supporting character, her popularity led to a much deeper storyline the following yearâand sheâs been a fan favorite ever since.
Her compelling backstory, psychological depth, and iconic design make her one of Gothamâs most fascinating figures.
The Origins of Harley Quinn
Harley was created by writer Paul Dini for the DC animated series. From the start, she was introduced as a fun-loving and obsessive fan and sidekick of the Joker.
Her personality drew inspiration from classic American actresses like Judy Holliday, giving her a bubbly yet clever vibe. But it was actress Arleen Sorkinâseen in a harlequin costume during a sitcom episodeâwho truly brought the character to life. Sorkin would go on to voice Harley in numerous DC productions.
Harley Quinnâs Backstory
After her TV debut, Harley's origin was explored in the 1993 DC Comics series. Under the alias Harleen Quinzel, she was a gifted gymnast and psychiatrist working at Arkham Asylum. There, she met the Joker. Fascinated by him, she slowly fell in love during their therapy sessions and ultimately helped him escapeâmore than once.
Eventually suspected by authorities, Harley herself was institutionalized. After a devastating earthquake destroys Arkham, she escapes and takes on her new identity: Harley Quinn, wearing a red-and-black harlequin costume as the Jokerâs official partner-in-crime.
Their chaotic relationship is toxic and intense. Though often abused and manipulated by the Joker, Harley returns to him again and again, torn between love and hate. Over time, she develops her own flamboyant personality and begins stepping out of his shadow.
âWhen your taste in men is as bad as mine, they don't just go away quietly.â

Harley also builds close bonds with Poison Ivy and Catwoman, forming the Gotham City Sirens. While often on the villainous side, they sometimes team up for good.
As a member of the Suicide Squad, Harley has proven herself a capable anti-hero, fighting alongside other outlaws like Deadshot and Killer Croc. With her cunning, charm, and acrobatic skills, sheâs a vital assetâespecially for infiltration missions.
Harley Quinnâs Personality

Harley is playful, unpredictable, and fiercely intelligent. She combines childlike expressions with twisted logic, often underestimated by allies and enemies alike. Her clownish antics conceal a brilliant mindâand her background in psychology makes her a master manipulator when needed.
Though mentally unstable and quick to rage, Harley is also deeply loyal and compassionate. She has two beloved pet hyenas and shares a close bond (romantic or platonic depending on the version) with Poison Ivy. Despite her obsession with the Joker, she craves genuine connection and recognition.

Harley Quinn in the Batman Universe
Harley plays by her own rules. Though she began as Jokerâs sidekick, sheâs no longer just a shadow of himâshe often works independently and even helps Batman when it suits her goals.
Sheâs typically positioned as a villain to Bruce Wayne, and has come dangerously close to killing him. However, sheâs also aided the Dark Knight on occasion, such as helping him capture the Joker.
Harleyâs stance toward the Justice League also varies. While usually at odds with them, she has shown admiration for Wonder Woman and has occasionally teamed up with heroes. Her unpredictability is central to her complex character.
She has appeared in countless forms:
- Animated shows and films
- Video games (Batman: Arkham series, Lego Batman, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League)
- Merchandise (costumes, figures, mugsâŠ)
- Feature films, where she has taken center stage.

A Musical, But Not as You Know It
Lady Gaga brings her bold artistry to a darker version of musical storytelling. Donât expect light-hearted numbersâin this world, the music exists only in the charactersâ minds, a reflection of their fractured reality.
âThereâs music, dance, drama, courtroom scenes, comedy, joy, and sadness.â

The soundtrack will feature around 15 songs, mostly covers, possibly with 1â2 originals.
The film's title, Folie Ă Deux, refers to a shared psychotic disorderâa fitting metaphor for Harley and Jokerâs descent into co-dependent madness.
